General Use Estimator
Buy NowAn accurate up-front estimate of what you will need to decorate your trees and outdoor spaces will make for an easy time. This guide helps to ensure that you achieve a uniform and aesthetically pleasing look while maximizing the efficiency of your lighting setup. The following guidelines will assist you in determining the appropriate amount of lighting and TREE-Z® Wrap pieces needed for your decorations.
For this example, we will use a tree - see the figure to the left. To begin, consider the dimensions of the area you wish to illuminate.
- Estimate or measure the canopy of the tree - a circular areas from the widest points (green circle in Fig. 1). In the example to the left, the tree canopy is approximately 20 feet in diameter.
- Estimate whether you will light the entire canopy or a smaller portion of it. In the example, the "Light It Up!" zone (orange circle in fig. 1) is approximately 10 feet in diameter.
- Calculate the amount string lights you will need for the Light It Up! zone. A general rule of thumb is to multiply the diameter of the Light It Up! zone by 15 to 20 to estimate the number of lighted feet of string lights you will need. Note: string lights usually list total length and lighted length - the differece is the unlit leader for the plug end connections.
- Calculate the amount of TREE-Z® Wrap you will need for the Light It Up! zone. A rule of thumb here is to multiply the diameter of the Light It Up! zone by 5 to 6. Note: TREE-Z® Wrap is based on linear feet since it stays only on one side and does not wrap around the trunk or branch.
In this example, the 10-foot diameter Light It Up! zone would require approximately:
- 150 to 200 lighted feet of string light for good coverage.
- 50 to 60 linear feet of TREE-Z® Wrap to hold lights on the trunk and enough branches for a great looking tree.
- Of course, this can vary based on personal preference and the desired density of lights.
Planning Tips:
- When planning your layout, it is also important to account for the distance between power sources and the lighting displays. Ensure that extension cords and power strips are rated for outdoor use if your display will be outside. This will help prevent electrical hazards and ensure a safe setup.
In summary, accurately estimating the coverage for your holiday lighting involves measuring the height and circumference of trees and shrubs, determining the appropriate number of lights based on these measurements, and considering the type of lighting used. By following these guidelines, you can create a stunning and safe holiday lighting display that enhances the festive atmosphere of your home or business.

For those who want a more precise estimate of lights and TREE-Z® Wrap, check out our Light It Up! calculator. You can also follow the steps below for a precise estimate of how many TREE-Z® Wrap pieces you will nee:
Step 1: Main trunk(s) – typically from ground to as high as you can safely reach with a ladder or lift
- Count how many tree trunks you want to wrap with lights
- Write down the linear feet, go to step 2
Step 2: Major branches – connects off of main trunk
- Count the number of branches you want to wrap with lights
- Estimate the linear feet for each branch you want to wrap
- Sum up the linear feet for all branches you want to wrap and write it down
- Go to step 3
Step 3: Sub-branches – connect off of major branches
- Count the number of sub-branches you want to wrap with lights, write it down
- Estimate the linear feet for each sub-branch you want to wrap
- Sum up the linear feet for all branches you want to wrap and write it down
- Go to step 4
Step 4: Sum up the total linear feet that you want to wrap with lights – trunks, major branches, sub-branches
- Calculate how much TREE-Z® Wrap you’ll need
- Small Pack covers 25 linear feet
- Medium Pack covers 50 linear feet
- XL Pack covers 75 linear feet
- 420 Bulk Carton covers 700 linear feet
